WATTALPS is proud to announce that its battery systems have officially received Marine Type Approval from Bureau Veritas, marking a major milestone in the company’s commitment to delivering high performance, safety driven energy solutions for the maritime sector. This certification crowns a long and rigorous qualification process and confirms the robustness and reliability of WATTALPS technology for demanding marine environments.
Safety at the heart of the qualification process
To obtain Bureau Veritas Marine Type Approval, WATTALPS batteries successfully passed an extensive series of tests required by the standard, including:
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, ensuring the batteries operate safely alongside other onboard electronic systems.
- Temperature and climatic tests, including cold test, dry heat and damp heat conditions, validating performance and durability across extreme temperature and humidity ranges.
- Vibration tests, demonstrating resistance to the mechanical stresses typical of marine applications.
- Thermal runaway non propagation tests, a critical safety requirement.
Thanks to WATTALPS’ immersion cooling technology, thermal runaway is effectively contained, preventing propagation between cells. More details on these safety results can be found here:

WATTALPS immersion cooling technology eliminates the need for a battery room chiller
WATTALPS batteries are built around the company’s patented immersion cooling technology. In this architecture, all cells — including the busbars — are fully immersed in a dielectric fluid. Cooling can be static, meaning no fluid circulation is required, which provides already highly efficient passive thermal management suitable for many applications.
For more demanding duty cycles, WATTALPS has developed a patented fluid circulation design in which the dielectric fluid flows around each individual cell. This approach ensures uniform and controlled cell temperature across the entire battery system.
WATTALPS technology enables effective heat extraction without the need for a dedicated chiller; a simple seawater heat exchanger is sufficient.
Approval across four cell types
The Type Approval covers four different cell categories ranging from high-energy to high power cells. This range ensures that WATTALPS can support a wide range of marine applications — from peak-shaving for hybridization up to fully electric vessels, which can also support ultrafast charging.
A strategic step for marine electrification
This certification strengthens WATTALPS’ position as a trusted supplier for marine electrification projects, enabling shipbuilders, integrators, and operators to deploy advanced battery systems that meet the highest international safety and performance standards.
« Achieving Bureau Veritas Marine Type Approval is a decisive step for WATTALPS and a strong validation of the engineering choices we have made since day one,” said Matthieu Desbois-Renaudin, CEO of WATTALPS. “Marine applications impose some of the most demanding safety and reliability requirements in the energy‑storage industry. This certification confirms that our patented immersion‑cooled architecture, our safety philosophy, and our industrial processes meet the highest international standards. It also opens the door for our technology to support the accelerating electrification of the maritime sector.”
WATTALPS acknowledges the extensive work carried out by its teams and partners throughout the qualification process and looks forward to supporting its customers in the successful electrification of their marine projects, whether new built or retrofit.
