WATTALPS is proud to announce a major milestone in battery safety and certification: WATTALPS battery system is the first in the world to be type‑approved by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt‑Bundesamt, KBA) under UN R100 Revision 5, the latest and most demanding global standard governing the safety of rechargeable energy storage systems for electric vehicles.
This certification also marks another industry first: WATTALPS is the first company to obtain approval for an immersion‑cooled battery under the updated regulation.
UN R100 rev.5 – a new benchmark for battery safety
UN R100 Rev. 5 significantly raises the bar for electrical, thermal, and mechanical safety. The regulation introduces stricter requirements for:
- Passive protection against thermal runaway propagation
- Fire resistance
- Vibration endurance
- System robustness, even under degraded or faulted conditions
The WATTALPS battery successfully passed all tests on a 39 kWh and 280 kW battery system, demonstrating exceptional safety performance. The approved battery is now certified for use in M3 and N3 vehicle categories, opening the door to deployment in heavy‑duty mobility applications worldwide.
Collaborative achievement
This accomplishment was made possible through close collaboration with KBA, Groupe Emitech, and ALEE, whose expertise played a decisive role in navigating the new regulatory landscape. Their contributions included:
- Deep technical interpretation of UN R100.05 requirements
- Early identification of sensitive design points (architecture, protections, fault scenarios)
- Delivery of rigorous technical justifications throughout the approval process
“Safety, robustness, and performance have always been at the core of our technology,” said Matthieu Desbois‑Renaudin, CEO of WATTALPS. “Being the first company worldwide to achieve UN R100 Rev. 5 approval, and the first to certify an immersion‑cooled battery under this standard, demonstrates the strength of our team and the reliability of our solutions. Most importantly, it reinforces our commitment to delivering the highest level of trust and value to our customers. »
Powering the most demanding industries
From road vehicles to mining equipment, maritime applications to port logistics, WATTALPS batteries provide full performance in extreme ambient temperatures, world-class power density, increased life, energy savings and quicker charging time. This new approval reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering battery solutions that meet the highest international safety standards.
